Notebook Gets a DVD Player, But What a Battery Hog It Is

A new ultrathin notebook from Compaq Computer includes a DVD player, which could be a neat addition for mobile movie buffs, just so long as they don't plan to watch ''Titanic.'' The reason is that the DVD player gorges on battery power, cutting about an hour from the average useful battery life of 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

The new notebook, the Compaq Presario 1920, is scheduled to go on sale later this month. Roughly an inch thick and weighing just five pounds, the notebook computer has 64 megabytes of RAM, a 6.4-gigabyte hard drive and a Pentium II processor, the exact speed of which has not been announced. The company has also not yet set a price.
