If Matthews would not sell out to Nortel then, why would he now consider a deal with others? Is the higher price now tempting him?

I suspect TM understands the trend is towards convergence between voice and data and that the players with the best technology will also need financial clout to play with the big boys. I'm guessing the deal fell out --- as I'm led to believe it did --- not over price but over details of when the arrangement would move from partnership to full buyout. Terry would not have played his hand so hard had he not been sure NN's technology could go nose-to-nose with the best out there. When you're selling to the carrier market, the equipment has to operate at 5 nines of reliability and that's not easily accomplished. Cisco's having trouble at GTE and Ascend's hitting snags at Bell Atlantic. The playing field is not static by any means.

Later ---
