** CLAIMS FOR FIRST-TIME JOBLESS BENEFITS fell slightly last week,
the government said on Thursday, but the decline was not as steep
as economists had expected. Initial claims for unemployment
insurance totaled 352,000 in the week ended Jan. 9, down from
356,000 in the Jan. 2 week, the Labor Department said. Economists
had expected jobless claims in the latest week to fall to 333,000.
