Lucent Seen Trying Brave New World Strategy
By Dick Satran

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news)'s $18.5 billion takeover of Ascend Communications is viewed by many as a bold step by the largest telephone gear maker into the brave new world of multimedia communications.

But in the high-tech industry some see it, instead, as the humbling of a giant -- an affirmation that the future belongs to those who build computer networks, not telephone circuits.

''It comes down to the idea that there will be a radical shift in service patterns in the next century,'' said Tom Nolle of technology assessment firm CIMI Corp., based in Voorhees, N.J. ''The change in the traffic pattern is going to justify a different kind of network infrastructure.'

The battleground is changing shape so quickly it's hard to say how big the market might be. It combines everything from traditional telephone to private networks to Internet services, carrying voice, data and pictures. Analysts use Carl Sagan-esque figures when they try to size it up.

''It's worth billions and billions of dollars,'' said Forrester Research analyst Maribel Lopez. ''There are 18 million ways to slice it. There is no lack of consumption. This market has been growing at double digits -- and it's going to continue to do so for a long time.''
