There's supposed to be an adaptor so you can use a regular SCSI drive on the iMac. I'd spring for that (not expensive, I think), back up to a regular SCSI drive, booting from it, and would reformat the original drive, then set up the original drive with 8.5 first, then restore the data to it.

Yes, I suppose AAPL is a bargain now, for leaps or shares, but I don't have a heart for it after losing this much money. Maybe I'll feel differently in a few days.

>>>Problem is, although he can boot off CD, how does he backup his stuff? Can't use a SuperDrive - that requires the USB driver which is not on the CD. Can't use TCP/IP and FTP, not on CD.
Only 2 solutions:
1) Appletalk to another machine (hoping someone has enough space).
2) USB Hard Drive.<<<

Check out the USB Zip. I know you can boot from a SCSI Zip (I've done it on occasion and I always keep a system copy on a Zip), but I'm not sure about the USB Zip.

<<Can't use TCP/IP and FTP, not on CD.>>

At Merck, we create emergency boot-CDs for the Macs that have alias icons to places on the server that we use to backup files.

All we need to do is set the Appletalk control panel to ethernet and away we go! Click on the folder, it asks for logon to server and you then dump everything on the server.

3) Physically remove and transplant the hard drive into another IDE machine, if available.

<<How much do you think a Rev A iMac is worth?>>

Mine is going to be worth $20,000 when I sell it to the Smithsonian in 2050. :)
