My memory is that S&P 100 and other Futures expire at the Open prices on Friday, while stock Options expire at the Closing prices on Friday.

A good reason for the market to open strongly and then fail within minutes, or the reverse - depending on where the market is relative to where it was when the contracts were written.

oex and stock call options expire saturday.
spx, dot, iix, sox, osx and all expire friday morning.
the value of the index is calculated using the opening
price of each stock that is a component for the
particular index.
if we have an opening like wednesday, a lot of the
out of the money puts will expire well into the money.
