Nazi's, Socialists, Communists - One and the same Center for the American Founding January 20, 1998 Balint Vazsonyi TAKING COMMUNISM SERIOUSLY By Balint Vazsonyi [First published January 20, 1998 in The Washington Times] The publication in France of "The Black Book of Communism" (reviewed in the Washington Times by Ben and Daniel Wattenberg, January 8) is setting off shockwaves in French political circles. But the book's real impact could be in America. At long last, we will have the tools to confront "Communism -- The Idea." Three centuries in the making, communism has offered the only challenge to the principles of the American Founding. It has done so under a bewildering variety of labels, all based on the identical doctrine: that human reason is supreme, and that certain people are capable of comprehending and arranging the world around us; that such people should guide all others toward an increasingly perfect and just society in which all desires will have been either eliminated or satisfied. Unlike the American quest for the best possible world, communism thus promises the perfect world. For Lenin, that meant a world where no one owned anything. For Hitler, one without Jews and ruled by Germans. Stalin combined it all -- no Jews, no ownership, and a world domination by Russia. Mao hunted down those who possessed Western books. All for social justice. All "in the best interest of the people." Eyebrows were raised when my 1995 essay "The Battle for America's Soul" detailed the parallels between the Third Reich and the Soviet Union as "The Unlikely Twins." Even more skepticism greeted the assertion that both grew out of nineteenth-century German philosophy. It comes as a relief that Tony Judt (New York Times, December 22, 1997) and Alain Besancon (Commentary, January 1998) published the same conclusions. Having grown up under both tyrannies, there was the troubling possibility that I had developed obsessions and mistaken them for reality. For sure, a lot is asked of native-born Americans with no experience of foreign occupation or tyranny, to see all this in the same light as those who lived through it. Even the often-shown horror pictures of the nazi concentration camps must appear as something from another planet. Visual record of the horrible deeds elsewhere is not accessible, and reports of them have been obscured by the beguiling language of socialism: "peace, compassion, international brotherhood." But reality is that even Mussolini was a socialist who, thrown out by fellow-socialists, formed his own socialist party named "fascist" after a symbol from ancient Rome. Reality is that Hitler's outfit was called the National Socialist German Workers' Party, with a manifesto copied from Marx. Reality is that Lenin's Bolshevik Party was based on German books. Differences merely reflected local conditions. Jiang Zemin, China's current president speaks of "Socialism with Chinese characteristics." Might some people be working on socialism with American characteristics? Most Americans prefer the notion that communism went out with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. But communism, remember, was not born in the Soviet Union. Why would it have died with the Soviet Union? Is it likely that the millions who signed on to The Idea just shrugged their shoulders in 1991 and drank a toast to the rule of law and free enterprise? Remember also: socialists, whether they realize it or not, are committed to building communism because socialism -- President Jiang Zemin reminds us -- is but a phase on the road to communism. Many see a difference between socialists and communists. But Marx, in the Communist Manifesto of 1848, already differentiates among seven types of socialism, dismissing all except his own. Since his doctrines are described as "socialist" and the publication is called "Communist Manifesto," it is just a game with words. The most successful word game was devised by Stalin, who renamed Hitler's regime "fascist" to cover up the fact that it, too, was socialist. For several decades, we have been fooled about nazism and communism as "opposites." Nazis were the ultimate evil but communists -- Hollywood assured us during the 50th anniversary of the HUAC hearings -- were good people. The "Hollywood Ten" of 1948, and many others since, believed that communism was really a good idea with a few "mistakes" along the way. By mistake, a hundred million people were killed in various terrible ways, so the "Black Book of Communism" informs us. That, and the irrefutable evidence of methods identical to those of Nazi Germany, should open many eyes at last. There is nothing we can do about the past. But we can do something for the future. We can change the words we use. As Alain Besancon points out in Commentary, the current vocabulary for our political spectrum is of Soviet origin. It placed socialists and communists on the left, "capitalists, imperialists" on the right. Once nazis entered the picture, they became the far right, and room was created for "moderates" in the middle. Each of these propositions is a deception. Placing communist socialists and national socialists at opposite ends feigned a quality difference between their agendas, and the people who joined them. It also hinted that everyone on the "right" was in some proximity to the hated nazis. Recently, "extremist" has been added to move those on the "right," rhetorically, ever closer to nazis. Accompanying this has been the refusal by persons who espouse classic socialist tools to be called socialist. What else should we call people who advocate redistribution, class warfare, classification by ancestry, political correctness, revisionist history, school-to-work, speech codes? Or do they not realize they are socialists? If so, millions of Americans might reconsider their stance once they realize its origins. Millions more might rediscover America's founding principles once they accept that nazism was just another form of socialism. So let us restore clarity. There are the principles of the American Founding: the rule of law, individual rights, guaranteed property, and a common American identity. They bring, maintain, and defend freedom. Then there is the road to socialism: "social justice," group rights, redistribution through entitlements, and multiculturalism. They crush the human spirit, and enslave the participants. One is home-grown, secured by the sacrifice of countless generations, and uniquely successful. The other is of foreign origin, propagated around the world by political operatives, and has produced the greatest tragedies of recorded history. It should not be difficult to choose. I have never felt as unsure about the future of this country as I do today. The transition from a government of laws to a government of men is almost totally complete. The results of decades of inept government education are now exposed for all to see. The mob-rule of democracy is about to realize it's greatest victory. Just why are so few people interested in this impeachment trial? Simple --- because they simply don't understand what's at stake. The average American has no clue what type of government this country has. They don't know how it works. They couldn't name the three branches of government and write one coherent sentence of the function of each if their lives depended on it. A full 90 percent of Americans couldn't name their State representative, State Senator, Governor, Congressman and the two U.S. Senators from their State. What's worse; if you think that these people are ill-informed on just who it is that represents them, wait until you start asking them just what type of government we have. Three full generations of American school children have now been indoctrinated in the government-operated schools with the idea that this country is a democracy. You couldn't find five public school teachers in this State who tell their students that the founding fathers of this country actually feared democracy, and deliberately rejected democracy as a form of government for the United States. The average American believes that this is a government of majority rule. What ever the most people want, they get. It's the age of polls. The telephone calls go out, the questions are asked, the numbers get crunched, the results are published, and the politicians must obey! And just what do the American people want? Freedom? Maybe, for a few. But just a little freedom. Not too much. Certainly not so much that personal responsibility might become a burden. The love that the average American feels for freedom is second to their desire for security. Clinton knows it. All politicians know it. If you have the computer programs to do it, go back and load all of Clinton's previous State of the Union speeches. Now, get your computer to count the number of times Clinton uttered the word "freedom" versus the number of times he used the word "security." I guarantee you, "security" will be the clear winner, by a factor of ten or more. Can any of you remember one single speech delivered by Bill Clinton --- just one --- in which he extolled the virtues of freedom? I can't. He's too busy extolling the virtues of government. For about fifty years now Americans have jumped at every single offer they get to trade a bit of freedom for more security. They are blind to where this is leading them. So, it's security you want? How about a system where everybody is guaranteed a place to live. A place to sleep. Everybody is guaranteed clothes. Work clothes and leisure clothes. Everybody is guaranteed a nice color television and three good meals a day. And that's not all. Everybody is also guaranteed free medical care --- for life! They don't have to pay a penny for it! A job is also guaranteed, as well as recreation. And when you die you are guaranteed a proper burial. It's security you want? You can have that security! It's easy! Just rob a bank, get caught, confess, and get sent to jail! There's your security for you. And for those of you who actually want freedom --- have you ever thought about just what is it that guarantees and protects that freedom? It's law. It's the rule of law. I've been through this diatribe before on the air --- but today is as good a day as any to repeat it. What is the one asset that government has that you don't? What is the one tool that government can use to achieve its goals that you cannot use? The answer? FORCE. Government is force. If the government wants more money, it can use force to take if from you. You, on the other hand, have to work for and earn any extra money you want. If the government wants property, it can use force to take that property from you. You, on the other hand, have to work for some money to use to acquire that property. If the government wants to deprive you of your liberty, or your life, it can use force to accomplish those goals. If you use force to deprive someone of liberty or life, you go to jail. So --- how do we make sure that the government doesn't overstep its bounds? How do we keep this entity --- the only entity that can use force to achieve its goals --- in check? LAW. That's what our laws do. The idea of the rule of law is that each and every person in this country, from your barber to the President, is required to abide by the law. To obey the law. No exceptions. Not even for the president. Sadly, you could walk into the street in front of your home or office and ask the first one hundred people you see to write one coherent sentence about the importance of the rule of law, and not find one up to the task. There are certain concepts that lie at the very core of our system of laws. I cannot think of one element that is more important to the entire structure of law than the absolute requirement that one tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth when sworn to do so. How can we possibly enforce our laws, how can we possibly control the immense power of government, if we cannot compel people to tell the truth? Without the threat of punishment for perjury, no person would be able to go into any court and resolve a dispute fairly. There can be no resolution to disputes, no righting of wrongs, if the truth cannot be discovered. And if there is no punishment for lies, than the truth will remain hidden. Now we have a president who has decided that the laws don't apply to him. We have a president who took an oath to uphold the laws and the Constitution of the United States, and then treated that oath like just another political promise. We have a president who asked God to be a witness as he told the truth in a civil case, and then lied in order to deny a person whom he had wronged her day in court. We have a president who lied to the American people, lied to the Congress of the United States, and lied under oath to a Federal grand jury in order to hide from his previous crimes. We have a president who has used his influence and power to get other people to violate the laws of this land, and to assist him in avoiding responsibility for his crimes. He is the most powerful man in the world …. and we can't believe a word he says. Bill Clinton has committed multiple felonies. There are over a hundred people in federal jail right now for having committed the same crimes that Clinton has committed. Now he is on the verge of escape. Viscously partisan Democrats are going to turn their eyes away from the law and let him walk. He will not be held accountable, and the standard for future presidents will have been lowered. Can you believe it? We have reached the point in the Clinton "most ethical administration in history" saga where the principal defender of Bill Clinton, and the point man in Clinton's attacks on his political foes, is a disgusting pornographer, Larry Flynt. Judith Reisman wrote about some recent studies of Flynt's Hustler Magazine for World Net Daily. [click here to read]. She notes that Flynt has printed naked children as young as three years old in sex scenes. She writes "Flynt regularly presents a volatile co-mingling of images of sex, violence, scatological degradation, fear and horror. Seen routinely are blood-dripping-mulitaled hands, arms, heads, breasts and penises, often gutted, decapitated, castrated and satanically murdered and cannibalized, racist and occult images dominate the magazine." And this is the man who the media is turning to for information on Republicans and other Clinton foes. HERE COMES ANOTHER IRS AUDIT Remember Elizabeth Ward Gracen? She's the actress who said that she had a little fling with Bill Clinton some years back. Now she's getting letters from the IRS saying that they are about to seize her property and her wages. HILLARY TAKES A HIT Paula Jones will be receiving a FedEx package today from Bill Clinton. It will contain a check for $850,000 in payment of the settlement reached in her sexual harassment lawsuit against the president. The new York Times reports that Chubb Group Insurance company paid about $475,000 of the settlement from a liability policy carried by Clinton. So, where did the other $375,000 come from? Hillary, that's who. They had to go into a blind trust held in the name of Hillary Clinton to find the rest of the money. Isn't that sweet? Hillary has to cough up almost $400,000 to help her husband pay off one of his sex victims. GIVE THE LEFT CONTROL AGAIN AND …… A lot of people expect the Democratic party to gain control of the Congress, as well as the presidency, in the 2000 elections. It turns out that the American people love government a little bit more than the Republicans believed. I saw a little gem hidden in an editorial in The Atlanta Constitution today that reminded me of what we would expect if the Democrats ever gain that control again. It was a reference to the causes of urban sprawl. One of the causes cited by the Constitution was the tax deduction we enjoy for home mortgage interest. Solution for urban sprawl? I guess you just end the deduction for home mortgage interest. To do that all you have to do is put the Democratic Socialist party in control again. It doesn't stop there. I'm going to give myself about 120 seconds to think of as many big-government programs the Democrats will initiate if we hand the power back to them in 2000 An end to the mortgage interest deduction. Eliminate capital gains tax exemption on profit from sale of home. A 15% tax on the outstanding balance of all retirement accounts, including pensions and 401K plans plus a 15% tax on all contributions to these plans from now on. Lower the employee thresholds to make more employers liable under the Americans with Disabilities Act and other government workplace regulations Expansion of the family leave act to require employers to pay a percentage of salary during the leave periods. No privatization of Social Security. Raise taxes and eligibility age instead. And that's just a start, folks. I ran out of time.
