RESEARCH ALERT - Whole Foods <WFMI.O> downgraded
CHICAGO, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Dain Rauscher Wessels said Thursday it lowered its rating of Whole Foods Market Inc., a natural foods supermarket chain, to "neutral-average" from "strong buy-average," to reflect near-term earnings uncertainty.

-- Dain Rauscher lowered its fiscal 1999 first quarter earnings per share estimate to $0.47 from street estimates of $0.58, and lowered its fiscal 1999 estimate to $1.75 from street estimates of $1.99, the research report said.

-- On Wednesday, Whole Foods said it expected to report fiscal 1999 first quarter earnings in the range of $0.45 to $0.50 per share, up from $0.44 a year ago, but less than analysts' estimate of $0.58 per share.

-- Shares of Whole Foods were down 9-11/16 at 34-13/16 in afternoon trade.

RESEARCH ALERT-Hanifen cuts Whole Foods <WFMI.O>
CHICAGO, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Hanifen, Imhoff Inc. said Thursday analyst Carole Buyers downgraded Whole Foods Market Inc. to accumulate from buy after the grocery chain said late Wednesday its first quarter earnings would fall short of expectations.

-- Buyers says in a report that despite the warning, Whole Foods said it did not expect to fall short of analysts' forecasts for revenues and gross margins in fiscal 1999.

-- Says lowers fiscal 1999 earnings per share estimate to $1.82 from $1.98 and estimates Whole Foods can grow earnings per share at a 19 percent rate in 2000.

-- Says she remains positive on the fundamental story of Whole Foods and recommends investors accumulate the stock in the $30-$33 range.

-- Shares down 9-1/4 at 35-1/4 on Nasdaq.
