SAN MATEO, CALIF. (Jan. 14) BUSINESS WIRE -Jan. 14, 1999--Inktomi Corp.
(NASDAQ:INKT) today announced financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 1999 ended December 31, 1998. Revenues for the quarter were $10.7 million, a 343 percent increase over revenues of $2.4 million for the comparable quarter in the prior year, and a 30 percent sequential increase over the previous quarter. Net loss for the quarter was $6.4 million or a loss of $0.24 cents per share compared to a net loss of $4.3 million or a loss of $0.25 cents a share for the year earlier period. When restated to reflect Inktomi's two-for-one stock split announced December 29, 1998 to be effective January 27, 1999, the loss per share in the first fiscal quarter was $0.12 cents compared to
$0.12 cents in the year ago period.

"This was a quarter in which we fired on all cylinders and our solid financial results and business accomplishments reflect our efforts," said David Peterschmidt, president and CEO of Inktomi. "We added some of the world's largest Internet companies to our marquee customer base, expanded distribution worldwide, forged key relationships and extended our technical leadership. We look forward to building on this base in the next quarter as we solidify our position as the company that is focused on 'Scaling the Internet.'"

Search Engine
In the first quarter, Inktomi significantly grew the number of search queries processed, powered new customers and initiated a strategic technology alliance. The Inktomi Search Engine processed approximately 1.8 billion search queries during the quarter, a roughly 33 percent increase over the prior quarter's 1.35 billion search queries.

During the quarter, the Inktomi Search Engine began servicing search queries for the world's largest Internet media sites, namely AOL's ICQ, GeoCities and the Microsoft Network. They were joined by @Home Network, Aeneid, Star Media, Grolier of France and Umbral Global of Mexico among others who also deployed services based on the Inktomi Search Engine.

In addition, Inktomi initiated a strategic technology relationship with Centraal, creators of the RealNames web page addressing system. The agreement enables Inktomi to offer customers an additional service and provides users with an intuitive way to find companies
