China Will Force Airline CEOs to Fly on Jan. 1, 2000, FT Says

Hong Kong, Jan. 15 (Bloomberg) -- China said it is forcing all airline industry chief executives to board flights on Jan. 1, 2000 as incentive for them to ensure the year 2000 computer bug is fixed, the Financial Times reported, citing Zhao Bo, the official at the ministry of information industries responsible for preparing Chinese industry for the glitch. China's biggest problem in preparing computers for the turn of the millennium is pirated software representing 90 percent of programs in use. Small, regional airlines, which are suffering from ticketing price wars, may not be able to afford the necessary computer upgrades, the paper said.

The U.S. said in September it may ban U.S. airlines from flying to and from countries that can't prove their air traffic control systems are free of the year 2000 computer problem.
