Prudential's Market Analysis (mention of CPQ)

January 14, 1999, 10:05 a.m. EST

Prices as of close on 01/13/99
U.S. Stock Market Outlook

Near-Term

Yesterday, the DJIA closed down -125.12 points to 9,349.56 or -1.32%. The DJIA fell on concerns regarding Brazil's currency devaluation. Financial stocks with Brazilian exposure and technology stocks took the brunt of the decline with a 2:1 declines over advances on the NYSE.

The best quote of the day came from Prudential Securities' Chief Investment Strategist, Greg Smith. Yesterday he said: “I am surprised that people are surprised about Brazil! I believe he is absolutely correct—last summer's cyclical bear market (July/October, 1998) discounted most of the world's international problems. Of course there will periodic after shocks but they should not result in a major sell off. In our “Intermediate-term stock market outlook” section (below) we write that these types of sudden declines must be expected during 1999—and that they must be used as buy opportunities. So far, many of the technology stocks that we like have held up well—for example, Compaq Computer (CPQ), Intel (INTC) and Microsoft (MSFT) to name a few.

We are still very optimistic about the overall market but are more than aware that the excesses created during the advance from the market's October 8th, 1998 low needs to be corrected. Yesterday's sell off actually benefits this normal profit taking process. So, once again, we encourage stock selection and are urging our readers to take advantage of any near term hesitation.

Steve,

Your right, trust me, I know, I have been here every agonizing minute of it! Then, as now, I think DELL's multiple is ridiculous, one of these times I'm bound to be right!!!
<ggggggggggg>
My odds get better with each prediction!
jajajajajajaja
I could have 3 or 4 times more CPQ if I would have bought Dell a year ago, that said, I think CPQ outperforms all the PC stocks this year.
