"it would be interesting, in light of this deal, to review how vigorously WNP and NextBand competed head-on in the auctions."

Mark, that's what I was thinking the FCC will look into. I don't remember the two ever competing in even one market. It was pretty obvious during the auction that the two were not interested in competing. I even mentioned it in some of my posts during the auction;

(#3952 dated 2/24/98)
"Big players look like they are going out of their way so as not to
compete with each other. WNP's only new leads- Albany, Buffalo, and
Rochester NY, Dayton OH, and Tampa-St. Pete. NextBand (Craig McCaw)
who has appeared interested in the West Coast, only bid on Lexington
KY, Huntsville AL, and Chattenoga TN, since nobody will overbid them
on the West Coast."

(#4018 dated 2/26/98)
"Nobody is challenging McCaw at all on the whole West Coast. Seems to suspicious to me."

(#4020 dated 2/26/98)
"<Is it possible that this auction could have the taint of orchestrated or implicit collusion?>

That's illegal. I wasn't going to suggest that :-)

But WNP and McCaw sure don't want to go head to head anywhere. Almost going out of their way to stay away from each other."

This whole thing kind of smells to me now.
