All, I logged in tonight, went straight to MS Investor to check to see if the indicies had been fixed for 12/30/99 to 1/5/99. I saw that they weren't and sent off the e-mail shown below to MS tech support. Then I came to the Neurostock thread and saw that it was the topic of discussion so I thought I'd go ahead and post it. I also believe that the predictions are suspect while this incorrect (missing) data is in the verification set, although we are not doing training on incorrect data (which could alter the model) until it shifts down to the training set.

Staci,
Hi again. I'm sure that you will be as surprised as I am to find out that the problem with the index dates 12/31/98, 1/4/99, and 1/5/99 discussed below still has not been fixed. The indicies are updating the new data fine, but the dates listed above still don't have data. This may not be a problem for some users but it will cause me problems. Could you please look into it again? Thanks,

Bob

>Thanks very much for your help and reply. I'm glad you were able to find the problem. I noticed that there is data for the indicies for 1/6/99, but that there is not yet data for 12/31/98, 1/4/99, and 1/5/99. I know you are still working on this and getting everything straighted out, I just wanted to be sure that you were aware that those days are missing data. I was unsure whether resumption of the index on 1/6/99 and on might be considered to have completed the problem without adding the data for the missing dates.

<Does the MS Investor site have enough information about the index components and weightings that you could reconstruct the missing data yourself? A close approximation might well be better than nothing at all.>

I looked for that kind of info when I started to make my own files and couldn't find any data on the weights. All they give you is a list of the companies in each index.

A close approximation might work, but you would have to save your altered file and paste the edited data back into the newly downloaded file every night or paste the current day's data into the edited file. Either way it would be a huge pain, especially if you have to edit 15 or 20 files or more, every night.
