I was hoping maybe for a reference to a post or posts outlining a computer previously setup that may be close to what I need/ want.

There are a lot of relevant posts. Read Clarence's posts. I think you are looking for something similar.

At present I run windows on wallstreet on a p100 clunker [95]

The consensus of the thread is NT for trading machines. The primary reason is stability. Win98 offers the best low cost multimonitor support.

This is what I think I would like to have. It would probably fall within the highend range and would have a p2 450 with a multi-screen adapter.

You have the right idea. A multimonitor card is the best solution IMO if you do not consider the cost. Going from memory..you will spend $700+ for a multiport card. It will only use one PCI slot..you will waste the AGP slot. I think STP? offers an AGP multimonitor card.

If you want to save $ you can install single cards (if you have enough slots) for less than half the cost of a multimonitor card.

Is there someone who has surfaced on the board who can do this reliably with top quality components that I can afford?

Minotaur minotaur.net is the current thread favorite for building a custom machine. Jon has a large selection of available quality components. It has been reported that he is easy to work with. You will have to wait in line.

KCcomputers may be an alternate. He gets good marks for customer service. I do not recall anyone on this thread that has purchased a computer from KC. I gather from his website that he will put just about any kind of machine together for you.

You do want a fast processor for the data feeds. PII 450 should do well. In lieu of the PII 450 MANY thread participants are opting for the Celeron 300A cpu overclocked to 450MHz. You get the same or better performance for $500 less. Minotaur built and tested an overclocked machine for Clarence. You probably will not see the 300A around too much longer. Intel will bump it off the bottom of the line as they introduce the 'faster' ha chips.

I do think that there are many subsequent options that may be helpful so that an open architecture would be helpful,

agreed

Go back and read some more of the thread...feel free to ask questions. Specific questions are easier to answer. Trying to cover a lot of issues in one post is difficult. To get a quality machine you need to look at the individual components and then have someone integrate them for you.

This is the results of my research. I'm upgrading an older PC, so i don't need the sound card, case, etc. They're also not so critical. This should give you a range of prices for very high quality, high performace products at remarkably low prices. I ordered my CPU/MB parts from PCNut. I plan on adding the ATI all-in-wonder AGP video card for around $160 and either using my old PCI video for the second monitor or buying a $50 generic PCI video card.

Mother board/CPU -- one choice:
motherboard $120 ABIT BH6
CPU $110 Celeron 300a, overclocked to 450 MHZ
CPU fan $15 From motherboard/CPU supplier...
RAM 64MB $100 PC100
