RESEARCH ALERT - Bear Stearns starts banks

NEW YORK, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Bear Stearns analyst Sean Ryan said Friday he started four bank holding companies.

-- He started First Union Corp. (NYSE:FTU - news) with an attractive rating, Wachovia Corp. (NYSE:WB - news) with a neutral rating and Wells Fargo and Co. (NYSE:WFC - news) and Centura Inc. (NYSE:CBC - news) with buy ratings.

-- Further details were not immediately available.

-- First Union shares closed at 61, Wachovia shares closed at 87-1/2, Wells Fargo shares closed at 35-9/16 and Centura shares closed at 70-3/4 on Thursday.
