Hilton to link its hotels to the 'Net'

Hilton Hotels today announced that it is deploying CAIS Internet's OverVoice service to all of its 250 hotels in the U.S.

CAIS' OverVoice technology will allow Hilton guests to connect to the Internet at up to 10M bit/sec while simultaneously using their telephone, explains Evans Anderson, senior vice president of sales and marketing and general manager at CAIS.

Because OverVoice uses existing copper wiring that is then connected to a standard 10Base-T Ethernet LAN, OverVoice customers like Hilton, are not required to wire a new network.
The ability to use the telephone lines that are already deployed played a key roll in Hilton's decision to roll out CAIS' service, says Bob Dirks, senior vice president of marketing at the Beverly Hills, Calif., hotel chain.

While OverVoice can support up to 10M bit/sec to each room, the amount of bandwidth will be determined by each hotel's Internet connection. For instance, if a Hilton Hotel had a dedicated T-1 to the Internet, then guests at that hotel would max out their Internet connection at 1.544M bit/sec.

Hilton plans to have all of its domestic hotels upgraded to the OverVoice service by year-end, Dirks says. All Hilton hotels with 200 rooms or more will have each room equipped with the service. All Hilton hotels with less than 200 rooms will have 50% of their rooms equipped with the service, Dirks explains.
