CATCH OF THE DAY: Set-top boxing

What a catfight! We've found two fascinating companies that
are trying to lock up a new market in "personalized TV."
Replay Networks and TiVo both make set-top boxes that use
hard disks to give you an instant replay of what you're
watching and have intelligence to help you record more of
what you want without requiring you navigate an awkward VCR-
style interface.

Like modern political campaigners, the TiVo and Replay
spokespeople are awfully fond of poking holes in each
other's product and company. But in truth, they're more
alike than different -- down to receiving nearly identical
funding rounds from Vulcan Ventures and sending out clone
press releases regarding content agreements with E!
Entertainment Television.

I'm reviewing the two products for my "Product Line" column,
to appear in the April issue of the Red Herring magazine.
But you can read about the state of the two companies now in
our online news story.
