scott, I suggest you peruse the annual reports of TXN for the last few years, you may be surprised to find that a big chunk of their profits is from royalties. I'll repeat, it is often much cheaper to buy a license and pay royalties then take the risk on an in house development.

No one wants to pay royalties to MSFT long term, they'll have one or two decent years than will fade away.
