Observations from my Dell experience: 1) I ordered 2 Dells right after thE new year. I spoke on the phone with one of the Internet sales reps. He indicated that the Internet Sales actually go up after Christmas, phone orders orders boom before Christmas and Internet in the new year. I thought that was interesting.
2) I placed my orders for 2 identical PII 450 machines. After one order I verified that he should submit the second order. By the time he submitted the order into his system (about 1 minute) 50 other orders had been taken! I have no idea that size of the orders but regardless that is a rate of nearly one system a second. Antecdotal evidence of sales only, but still interesting.
