Iraq today is a creation of the US arms dealers. Even biological weapons were shipped from a lab in Maryland to Baghdad, all in the name of keeping the Gulf safe for free markets. Iraq's military was one of the best in 1990, only because of Western help.
The US then tried to reverse this militarisation, with a war.

Similarly Afghanistan - the freedom fighters are a Western-backed military machine out if control, and now the US wants to quell them with a war on terrorism.

Both involve spending vast sums on arming the 3rd world protaganists, then spending more on the domestic military budget. Its a win-win for the arms trade, but total madness as a way of solving the real issues. The end result is far from conducive to a functioning democracy in these areas eg the Taliban?? Plausible deniablity about any US role.

Look closely at where Mr "World War III" wants to spend vast sums next, and who will benefit (Lockheed Martin maybe?). Only this time your civil rights will fall prey to the militarisation of US territory. You could be shot if your carkeys show up wrong on the airport scanner. You could be shot if you point your finger at the wrong person, who turns out to be a counter-terrorism special agent checking the way you drive your car. Welcome to the militarised society, its more profitable for the arms dealers this way!
