With floppy compatibility Zip would grab a larger share of the transitional market...

Iomega decided eons ago that this was not a viable solution. Too much iomega costs associated with two distinct drive mechanisms. Besides, why not step up into the future and make the zip drive the standard "floppy" drive and quit clinging to technology that was invented in 1984. The 3.5" floppy disk drive is the only remnant of such obsolete technology left in today's computers.
