Outlook For Product Approvals, Scientific Breakthroughs On Tap At Bethesda Biotechnology Stocks Forum Jan. 23

BusinessWire, Thursday, January 14, 1999 at 15:06

BETHESDA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 1999--Concluding a year
that saw progress on many fronts, the biotechnology industry is
optimistic that 1999 will bring more product approvals, improved
financial performance and significant scientific breakthroughs out of
hundreds of laboratories across the land.
Individual investors have an opportunity to hear the latest
developments in biotechnology from a noted industry expert plus
executives from several biotech companies at Informed Investors Forums
in Washington D.C. and California in January and March.
On Saturday morning Jan. 23 at the Bethesda Hyatt, biotechnology
analyst Peter Freudenthal of BancBoston Robertson Stephens opens the
Forum with an overview of the biotech industry and stocks to watch.
Freudenthal is a closely-watched analyst whose knowledge of the
industry is considered among the best anywhere.
After Freudenthal's address, attendees will hear full
presentations from executives of six biotechnology companies.
Presentations are very similar to the ones given by companies to
industry-focused investment banking conferences typically closed to
individuals.
One presenting company, Liposome (NASDAQ:LIPO) of Princeton,
recently announced it has turned the corner to profitability, making
it one of only a handful of profitable biotech companies. Its Abelcet
product for the treatment of severe, systemic fungal infections is
approved in 21 countries.
Another presenting company, Gene Logic (NASDAQ:GLGC) of
Rockville, Md., was recently profiled in the Washington Post. Gene
Logic recently announced an important agreement with Affymetrix
(NASDAQ:AFFX) to use the latter company's GeneChip probe arrays to
build large, commercially available gene expression database products.
A third presenter, Collateral Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CLTX) of San
Diego is developing non-surgical cardiovascular gene therapy products.
The other three presenting companies in Bethesda are CytRx
(NASDAQ:CYTR), a leader in fighting sickle cell crisis, OSI
Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:OSIP), a drug discovery products company, and
Digene (NASDAQ:DIGE), which develops DNA and RNA tests.
The Bethesda Forum runs from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The cost, which
includes a continental breakfast, is $30 prepaid, $40 at the door.
Call Informed Investors at 800/992-4683 to register. Audio tapes will
be available for $45 plus $3.95 S/H which includes all company
presentations plus keynote speakers. Individual company tapes are $18.

Two biotechnology Forums are scheduled for March 13 in San Diego
and the San Francisco Bay Area. Among the companies that will be
presenting at those Forums include Geron (NASDAQ:GERN) and Genentech
(NYSE:GNE) in the Bay Area. Local company Isis Pharmaceuticals
(NASDAQ:ISIP) heads up a strong group of biotechs in San Diego. On
Saturday Feb. 13 in Los Angeles, a "Surgical Advances" Forum --
focusing on companies that are developing products to enhance
successful surgeries -- will be highlighted.
All Informed Investors biotech forums are co-sponsored by
BioSpace.com, recently named the best biotechnology website. Since
1993, Informed Investors has hosted scores of quality companies and
industry experts at its Forums. In 1998, the company hosted 20 Forums.
