IMF not yet ready to judge Brazil currency float

Reuters, Friday, January 15, 1999 at 11:17

BOSTON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - IMF First Deputy Managing
Director Stanley Fischer said on Friday it was too early to
assess the likely impact of Brazil's decision to let its
currency, the real, float.
Fischer was speaking by video link at an investment
conference in Boston.
"It's very early to be drawing any firm conclusions now on
Brazil," Fischer said in response to a question.
"Questions on exchange rate systems, on how to make them
more flexible and when, is high on the agenda," he added.
Brazil attempted to stage a controlled devaluation on
Wednesday when it allowed the real to fall more than 8 percent
against the dollar. But the Central Bank's attempts to keep it
there were put under severe strain by massive dollar outflows.
Bowing to overwhelming pressure to let the real float,
Brazil on Friday gave up defending its currency.
