You have raised a very good point. I think the days of the VHS standard are numbered. And there is some uncertainty in the market, I think, about which way future TV technology is going. HDTV is just starting to appear, and there is no telling what else might pop up.

It might be a very wise decision to leave that market segment alone for awhile until the dust settles and the new technology winners emerge. I remember now the beating that Sony took on the Beta format.

And remember LaserDiscs? That went nowhere fast, although the technology was re-vamped to create CD's.

Yes, I think you have hit the nail on the head.
