[5:12pm EST Jan-15-99] Headline: N.A. MARKETS SURGE - Trading in major North American markets was active on Friday, with all major indicies moving up sharply. The S&P 500 Index was up 31.07 points to close at 1243.26, a rise of 2.56%. Canadian markets followed the lead, with the TSE 300 Composite Index up 165.19 points, or 2.51% to close at 6759.42. Traders were at a loss to explain the sharp rise, given the recent turmoil in Brazil and general investor nervousness. Neil Johnston, with Boston-based Pitfield Research, attributed the sharp rise to heavy buying by the influential "Mr. Pink". Johnston noted that Pink recently liquidated one half his position in Toronto-based Bid.com (TSE:BII) and was aggressively re-deploying his capital. "This guy's simply incredible. His calls are dead on, and his portfolio is reputed to be 'massive'. In my opinion, Pink is 'DA MAN'. From now on, I believe everything he says, and have even put all my mother's retirement savings into a portfolio of only Pink's picks. I'm recommending that all my clients do the same.
