I believe the e-letter for that site is optional.
In any case, you can use the myriad of free email services to
keep the spam from your "real" mailbox (tho you must reveal
a "genuine" address to some number of THEM).
Still, I understand your problem. For me, it is exceeded by
my reluctance to post copyrighted materials.
Finally, I think it is hopeless to believe that you can get
away without compromise if you want to make use of the info
that's available on the Net. I regularly register with such
sites and, if I don't use them, unregister. Network World,
in particular, I recommend.
Take heart that all the spam is increasing the need for SUN
(and I suppose DEC) servers.
