The bigger the spread the more money they make.... average 8 cents spread times 1,300,000 = $104,000 divided by 2 = $52,000 (because on any given order there is usually two transactions where the MM buys from the bid (1st trade) and sells to the ask (2nd trade) and keeps the spread. It is buying volume that forces the MM to close the spread by making it risky to sell to the ask (the buyer) and then try to cover at the bid while the bid is moving up for the lack of sellers..... at some point, the bid may be more than the MM selling price if the action is hot.
