how did they structure the devaluation

It was a typical mess - first they widened the band of fluctuation and said they would defend that. Then when that didn't work the next day they did a free float. Similar to Britain falling out of the ERM back in 1992 for example.

But I don't understand the details that led to success in Brazil for the moment and the much bigger devaluations which lead to bankruptcies defaults and stock-market collapses etc. in some East Asian countries.

I don't know the current foreign debt or trade balance of Brazil which would be some driving factors.
