"Sic transit gloria mundi = literal translation from the Latin "thus passes the glory of the world" a better translation "so much for the praises of men". It is reputed to have been said by, I believe, Sir Walter Raleigh (someone correct me, if I'm wrong) when summoned before Elizabeth I in honour of one of his sea-faring conquests for her and for England. Apparently, in full view of her court, he slipped and fell. He then uttered the words. They have been given more profound meaning in religious and other contexts.
