INTERVIEW-HP(HWP.N) to form Asian Y2K crisis teams

NEW DELHI, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard(HWP.N) is forming teams of experts in different Asian countries to tackle millennium bug problems for its clients, the firm's Asia Pacific chief said on Friday.

''We are worried about it (the millennium bug). Asian firms lag behind western companies in dealing with the problem,'' HP's president and managing director, Asia Pacific operations, Dick Warmington, told Reuters on the sidelines of a news conference.

If the bug is not fixed, computer chips running everything from household products to complex aviation systems may recognise the year 2000 as 1900, resulting in malfunctions.

As the end of 1999 approaches, analysts predict that many firms will not be able to fix the problem in time.

Warmington said that awareness of the Y2K problem was growing in Asia, but many of HP's clients had been focussed on financial issues arising from the region's economic crisis and had little time left to deal with the issue.

''There is a real reason to be worried. It's a pervasive kind of problem. You don't want to worry about it (the millennium bug) as you have other business issues to worry about, but it will catch up with you.''

HP would endeavour to have people ready to respond to a crisis that its customers might have ''when, all of a sudden, something isn't working because of this problem,'' he added.

Warmington said HP, which had sales of some $6.0 billion in Asia Pacific in 1997/98 (Oct-Sept), would probably have hundreds of people addressing the problem across the region.

I have been told that Prudential is calling up its' clients and recommending Y-2K stocks!

Anyone use Prudential? What companies are they picking?

PS Is this the same company who said last year there is not a serious problem?
