SGI has great brand equity and good technology, is starting to get focused after several years of somewhat scattered direction. No one has yet emerged as a clear leader in high end NT workstations. CPQ has good hardware technology but will be digesting the Alpha workstation position for a while yet. HP clearly dropped the ball and will probably retrench around a Unix-centric position. So SGI has an opportunity to develop mindshare as a leader in NT workstation technology if they can successfully integrate their Unix expertise. Much of the value in the high end workstation business is relationships with the developer community, and SGI is the best in that regard.
