*** OTopic Y2K!*** The courageous Jane Garvey, boss of the Federal Aviation Administration isn't showing that much gumption. We in New Zealand will fly straight into Y2K nearly two days ahead of her if she starts her trip in Los Angeles. So any problems which are going to show up will be well demonstrated over here. To add to the spice, our computer systems tend to be more archaic so any problems will be especially severe here. If Air New Zealand planes start spinning out of the sky, I imagine that she will immediately cancel her trip and plead urgency to consult on the problems. Personally, I think Y2K problems are enormously overstated and so much doesn't work anyway we'll hardly notice if something does conk out. With a bit of luck, it will mostly be the large, legacy, extensive and expensive government systems which will collapse. Hopefully the payroll section and all data and employee details will be lost so all government employees will have to reapply for jobs. Hopefully all welfare recipients will also go off line so they will all have to reapply and live on family support for a while. With luck, it will take 10 years to get the government back to full spending rate. No wonder governments seem more worried than business. If one company can't make planes fly, another will soon be getting a LOT of customers. Mquarkce. PS: SurferM, while a free junket to the WWeb jamboree in Australia would be fun, my Scrooge side feels queasy at the prospect of dollars flowing out of the bottom line of Q! to the CDMA Development Group and into Air New Zealand's bloated corporate salary structure and government mandated monopolies on air routes. I think I'd decline. I don't really think I'd have much to say either. They can read it here for free and click past the unsuitable parts. Wet blanket I know, but a dollar is a promise! On the other hand, my dissolute, golfing, self-indulgent side suggests it would be quite a good idea and heck, it would probably add more value than it cost and if I don't spend it somebody else will and ....it is easy to see how governments spend a LOT of other people's money!!
