An engaging concept but maybe not airtight. Being against abortion and being against contraception is not a conclusive indicator of hypocrisy. Quixotic definitely - but not necessarily hypocritical. The intellectual pressure in a charismatic/missionary church is intense, and among the precepts handed down is that extramarital sex is a bad thing - not to be condoned or rewarded. Admitting to the desirability of contraceptives is inseparable from giving extramarital sex a place in the world. In the USA the approved way to deal with this problem is to painstakingly ignore it and to wipe out any reference to it. Thus the zeal to bar sex ed from our schools - the fear is that knowledge breeds curiosity. (The illogical converse is that ignorance assures inaction. Uh, hello...)
Idealistic? Guess so. Deep denial? Oh yeah. Hypocrisy? Well, definite only with the smart ones.

Steve, the points you raise are thoughtful and a refreshing change from so much of the ranting on the subject of abortion. For years it has been my opinion that if the Catholic Church had eased up on the issue of contraception while holding its position on abortion, that position would be far more credible--and livable.

"I would also like to point out that any anti-abortion activist who is not a screaming hypocrite must support free availability of contraceptive devices and a welfare system that would provide support for unwed mothers and their children. Do you?"

Mostly, yes I do, particularly free availability of contraception.

Steven,
Difficult questions. That's why I didn't answer. I am not the oracle of delphi. I am not a staunch supporter of the catholic church either. I also oppose state welfare in principle although it alleviates suffering. Obviously private charity has never been adequate for the needs of the masses. So the state must step in. They pick my pocket to do it. There are less pockets to pick in the poorer countries. What country do you live in? Mexico? It has to be South America somewhere.
