OT - Teledesic reply Mkilloran, thus far the only service sectors that I am aware of that Teledesic will fill is that of access and transport. That is, access, from the last mile and remote hand off perspectives, and transport over the wider area to distant terrestrial nodes. In other words they are primarily positioning themselves to replace the ILEC in the last mile, and the Interexchange carrier in the long haul. They will interwork with terrestrial-based fiber optic systems where it makes strategic sense to do so, in order to tie their earth stations together, and to hand off to domestic networks. If caching is performed, it would be incidental to their primary function, and it would most likely be a determination that its customers (ISPs, VPN users, etc.) would make, but I don't see it being in their (Teledesic's) plans to perform a grand form of caching themselves at this time. If I am mistaken about this, maybe someone would please advise... I am unaware of any intentions on their part to go nose to nose in the content and hosting areas. Although, they are not destined to go live for another four or more years, so anything, I suppose, is possible between now and then. I could see McCaw and Gates holding back for now, from making claims about providing additional services. But if it is within Teledesic's powers to do so by then, and if it makes business sense, who knows? In any event, we're talking about a very long term horizon here, and in Internet Time, 4 or 5 years would be about an etermity from now, for most planning purposes. Let's not forget that this concept was first brought to the table in the late eighties, early nineties, and the 'net was not then what it is today (and who knows what it will be in four or five years?). Just my thoughts. Regards, Frank Coluccio
