Tom, I think the answer to the "shipped" versus "produced" question lies in the "backend production constraints" problems. Since we know they were selling everything they could produce, they were not increasing finished goods inventory, but unfinished product was clearly backing up. In those quarters when inventory was reduced they were pretty clear about sales being higher than production.

I am curious about the exact nature of those "backend production constraints". Last year when they were short on SDRAM testers they said so. Does "backend production constraints" simply mean poor yields? I know that there is a lot of redundancy built into memory chips and that most bad chips can be fixed, but that of course consumes more time. Perhaps one of our resident process experts could comment on this???
