By whom? I think either the people who are putting together a Corel Computer spin off OR Corel Computer people who are putting together a big OEM deal, with the understanding from day one , that Mike would stand away. He is containing himself ,but by the Geez, with difficulty - as if we care ?

Still quick on the Draw

...Flamboyant chief executive Michael Cowpland has taken Corel Corp. on a 10-year ride that can best be described as rags to riches to almost rags and -- finally -- back to riches --or at least a profit. CorelDraw has played the biggest role in every facet of the tale and did more than any other product to put Ottawa on the high-tech map.

Indeed, just a year ago Corel Corp. was close to failure after a Quixotic and ruinously expensive challenge to Microsoft's and Intel's domination of the desktop computer market with a premature bet on Java software and new network computers.

The company was only saved by slashing advertising and research costs. Today, Corel Corp. is a much more cautious company, sticking to its knitting and trying to extend existing major products -- the CorelDRAW graphic software product, which will introduce a ninth version this year, and WordPerfect productivity suites.

Corel still hopes to challenge Microsoft and Intel's domination of the desktop computer world with new Corel Computers using the open Linux operating system.

But it is clear there will be no more mammoth assaults featuring huge advertising and research spending by Corel. "We are much more narrowly focused now," Mr. Cowpland said.

Instead, Corel plans to mine its base of 50 million users of WordPerfect, CorelDRAW and Print House to encourage them to upgrade to newer, higher-priced versions of the products....
