Jadrew, Re, "History 101", I don't know very much about the history of GM, outside of the cars they've made, but I know fair amount about IBM's history. Under Jack Akers, the CEO they ousted in favor of Lou Gerstner, and Akers' immediate predecessors, IBM had become known as a constipated elephant. They were far far overstaffed, never did any housecleaning, and arrogant, their motto being 'here's what we developed, you need it, buy it. Don't tell us you need something different.' In other words, they did very little customer surveying to find out what they wanted. If you're thinking of coming back with 'Intel is the same', don't waste your time. I've been in future products requirements development meetings with Intel engineering and technical marketing people. Their attitude is just the opposite of the old IBM's. They take in everything you ask for (that's reasonable, of course), and combine it with what many others have asked for, to make a preliminary requirements spec. It will be consolidated later, of course, but you will be consulted with on features and functions that might not be able to be included. I have seen no arrogance or swagger, just a "let's develop the product requirements spec. together" attitude. As far as the constipated elephant part, Grove's book with the word paranoid in it says it all. As big as Intel is now, they still look over their shoulder and compete like a 27 billion dollar startup. And, I don't think anyone would say Intel is afraid to do a little housecleaning, in all their history, when necessary, even last year. So don't expect the fall of the Intel empire anytime soon.
