Hard disks to give Net a hard time
Faster, higher-capacity hard disk drives, incorporated into the TV set-top boxes of the future, may be the trojan horses which lure people from the Internet back to television. A report from Boston-based Strategy Analytics' Interactive Home Services concludes that developments in hard disk drive storage will allow broadcasters to build new revenue streams from interactive services. "Delivering interactive video (transmitted by broadcasters, stored on hard disks) is the ultimate goal," said David Mercer, IHS Director. "The broadcast industry now has the chance to leapfrog current Internet technology in delivering compelling interactive video-based applications to the mass market." The report predicts high-capacity drives will allow temporary or permanent storage of massive amounts of data, including high-quality video. Consumers will be offered premium services such as "Virtual VCRs", on-demand access to interactive information, and transaction content.
