>Since that is the case, why would anyone want to buy a "dual function" drive they obviously don't need? What am I missing here?<

In all fairness to Sony, these initial drives are intended as add ons so a floppy is already there (which does limit the appeal). The HiFD and SuperDisk make the most sense as an integral part of a laptop or designed in as an OEM component.

Problem is that the design complexity of the dual function drives make them more expensive than a floppy and a Zip.

David:

The storage market will only get bigger with more & more net use & people now saving their own digital pictures & mpeg audio etc .. so it's no wonder that there is now so much competition .. IBM has a great new mini system (expensive) .. but you have the VHS & BETA or .. Apple vs Microsoft problem .. one has to become the standard, we can't all have different systems .. Apple could have ruled the planet, just wouldn't license their operating system .. they make a great product .. only now might they really get a better share of the everyday PC market, after how many years? IBM & Apple let Microsoft happen .. Bill wins by default really.

IOM would have to really screw up big time to loose IMO .. but man oh man some people just can't stand to say anything good about them. If they don't blow the shorters out of the water next week, it'll never happen. They are in the driver's seat .. $9.00 after all that happened last week is proof enough for me.

Just a few more extended thoughts.

Mike
