The first sentence of your post gets to the ostensible reason for class action lawsuits. The real reason is to pad lawyers' pocketbooks IMHO. Shareholders get virtually nothing, and may, in fact, be harmed more than hurt, because funds for any adverse judgment would come out of THEIR company's coffers absent sufficient officer's and director's insurance. There are way too many frivolous suits out there which support the vibrant, growing industry of class action barristers.
