Agreed - but this was a response to a panic situation - I was talking about the last recognised deflationary era (not disinflationary, but deflationary) - namely the 30s.

I have to admit, however, that in the more recent past gold has not reacted to traumatic events in the traditional way - the $US has reigned almighty,and US bonds have been a safe haven - as per your remark above. dd
