I grew up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin. My brother and sister still live about 35 miles from Eagle River. My brother & I have been fishing Canada since 1956. About 20 years ago we discovered the perfect fish camp. It is located on an island 12 miles by boat from the nearest town. They have very clean little housekeeping cabins, great fishing and the camp owners are just plain folks. What is more, the prices are very reasonable compared to most other camps in the area. I don't mind outhouses, propane stoves, and doing my own cooking and I love the prices, so back I go every year. Some years twice. We took our mother there a few years back when she was 85. She still talks about it. Next June I'm taking my 10 and 12 year old grandsons there. When the crappies are on the bite it seems as if all of the other species are also. The best day of fishing I ever had was the day the crappies came into the boat dock area. Thirteen fishermen in a space about half the size of a basketball court. Everyone filled their crappie limit with fish from 12 - 18 inches and caught a few bass, northern and walleye at the same time. We actually got tired and in the afternoon we all got in our boats and went out onto the lake to relax. Last year I got an 8 lb 2 oz Walleye about 3 miles from camp. Two of the guys in camp decided to fish only smallies one morning. In two hours they caught and released 36 fish, several over 4 pounds. One of the groups there was a man and wife with their kids. It was a lot of fun to watch the kids get the fishing bug. Toward the end of the week, we had them in the boat with us one morning. We ate walleye, crappie and perch almost every day. Annette, you don't have to spend a fortune in Canada and the fishing is exceptional compared to Wisconsin and Minnesota (land of 10,000 lakes and 3 fish). Go and enjoy yourself. Ron
