I haven't thought about it that way - but it makes sense to me. Deep inside I must think of nonverbal communication as an atavism, as "cheating". Intellectually I realize that this is not so and that it's quite fair and very useful to read the sidebands. But deep inside - if the verbal message does not match - I tend to discard the entire interaction as "corrupted signal. Retransmit or cancel". Dopey me.

The Frau (a woman of good heart and muuch better nonverbal empathy than foamy old moi) puts up with this. I'd buy her roses if they weren't so unfunctional. :-)
