To All, Happy Smarty Marty Had a Party Day. I am old enough to remember when American race relations were much worse and have travelled enough to know that they are much better in many other countries. Much worse in some other countries, too. MLK was definitely a great man, though I consider him more of an organizer and speech maker than an innovator. Rosa Parks, now that's who should have a holiday, but she is planning to live forever and you can't have a holiday until you croak. <G> So, MLK is probably our best choice.

Even in this day and age I hear people say things like "all blacks are lazy." Yeah, just look at that layabout who won the Houston Marathon yesterday and the other 5 Kenyans who finished in the Top Ten. Lazy bums they are. <G> "All Latinos steal." Most folks who say that don't have anything anyone would want to steal. I have an acquantance, who, despite being sent to several sensitivity classes by his employer, still refers to Jewish folks as "The Enemy." And I have one broker, a very nice guy in most ways, who sees everything in ethnic terms. "He acts that way because he's Italian." Kind of sad 3 decades after King was assassinated.

It is a big change from the days when I thought I was breaking ground in the 1960s by dating an African-American woman in public (there has always been lots of private hanging out). Heck, she was a stone fox, so I was really sacrificing bigtime on that one. <G> I think the only reason she dated me was because she was a rebel. However, that pairing caused little controversy as white male/black female didn't seem to bother that many folks other than her parents, and I think that had more to do with the white male being kind of a bum. <G> Black male/white female was another story, and one point I wasn't getting an operation to prove. <G>

So, for some it is a day off or a day when Amazon does not go up 30 points. For racists, MLK Day is a travesty. As Arsenio Hall said when Arizona wouldn't pass the MLK Day Holiday, "Man, you have to be really prejudiced to turn down a day off with pay." <G> But I think it is great and I still wish is was Rosa Parks day. No offense to MLK, but a lone woman defying a city by refusing to change her seat on the bus reeks of courage to me.
