Being a veteran of Telecommunications industry, my conversations with other fellow professionals tell me that this is going to be a year of consolidation for the telecom equipment makers as well as the service providers. Conversations within the financial community also verify that Ciena will get sold, with a purchase price between $45 - $55 a share. I held Ascend till it got acquired by Lucent. I also hold Cabeltron Systems (which recently hired Merril Lynch to find itself a buyer .... is trading at $10/share) and Fore Systems (a top ATM equipment maker and according to Business Week should hit high 20s on it's own merit, lest sold). Within Telecom service providers, I hold Nextel, which should get acquired by MCIWorldcom. There is a lot of business synergy between the two companies. Craig McCaw owns Nextel. Once he sold McCaw cellular to AT&T, there was always a talk that he would build nother Cellular company and sell it again ... now is his chance!! Good luck all!
