L,

I don't think that GSM is losing the standards battle (certainly not worldwide) as we evolve to 3G but CDMA worked faster and better than the GSM advocates ever expected in the US. QCOM has done a great (I'm invested in QCOM). Sprint and PCS Primeco have built out well. People like Bell Atlantic using 800 MHz dual mode AMPs/CDMA and ATT using 800 MHz D-AMPS(TDMA IS-136) and 1900 MHZ TDMA IS-136 are offering great bundled rate plans that the GSM guys can't match.

GSM lacks a national footprint. The upcoming auctions hopefully will change that. They also don't have the deep pockets of Sprint, The RBOCs, Primeco, At&T and they have no national name recognition.

Upside is the PCS licenses are worth a great deal. Suspect we'll see some consolidation in the GSM community and it would be great if someone like MCI got into the game on the GSM side. It's not over yet.
