One more. Yeah they want to make their own switch too......I know where they can get a nice one already to go!

ww2.altavista.com@3227971@alt%2ejobs%26fibre+channel

a group of 6-8 highly talented hardware engineers involved in the
development of high speed Fabric switches for use in Storage Area
Networks. The technology will make use of Fibre Channel, Gigabit
Ethernet, and ATM
. The group will reside in a newly created division
formed for the express purpose to take advantage of the fast developing
storage area network market.

Go ANCR, they may not finish on time.

JFieb,

I have some comments:

1. It appears to me that somebody at 3COM has made a business decision that they can still come up with an FC switch that can compete with Ancor's on both features and price point. I remember somebody last spring looking for a sponsor that would allow them to build an FC switch for about $20M. The good news is that even with Ancor's price point, someone has decided that they can make money and absorb development costs.

2. The edge devices like GE/FC and ATM/FC devices will take on more importance. Anything that Ancor can do in this area will be a bonus and as several people have posted on this thread there is a rumored edge device for GE/FC. The "intelligence at the edge" reference just means that the switching happens at the switch ASIC and not at the software level.

J. Fieb:

From your post #922 on FC thread:
<<Neema also said the entry of LAN vendor 3Com Corp., which recently
announced a SAN initiative and made an equity investment in Gadzoox, willexpand the market. "Expect more of these deals," he said. >>
