Any ideas why my wife's new machine fries floppy drives?

I've tried 3 floppy drives, and have finally wized up that as implausible as it may seem, the PS, cabling, or something in my wife's machine (not an In-Winn case, but one her father gave to us that fits her desk) must be tubing them somehow.

Each time, the floppy didn't even light up in that machine. When put in other known good machines, the LED stays lit and drive spins constantly, but it won't read anything.

I'm really just inferring that they're fried. It took so long to suppose this because it doesn't make much sense--none of the other components are having problems, and they're all on the same standard 5 volt circuit.

Could I be repeatedly attaching the cables wrong? Could this be caused by a miswiring of one or more of the small connectors? How forgiving are floppies of this? can mis-attaching the ribbon cable cause this kind of problem too?

Argh. She needs her machine, and I'm pretty tired of this dumb problem. Can't seem to find much on Deja News either. And I really would rather not sacrifice more good floppy drives to my own ignorance. :(

TIA,

Dave
