short answer (DVD format wars irksome, but irrelevant to the patents)

yes, the squabbles delay royalty recognition to the extent that
consumers delay acceptance of anyone's products.

but no, the fundamental 4,744,055 and its japanese equivalent is disk-format independent, not even mentioning the land-and-groove-style bit-pushing inherent to DVD-RAM (but not DVD+RW) media.

joe master did have a point that if ricoh continues to be obstreporous for CD-RW why wouldn't they continue the charade for DVD media. i've convinced at least myself that the abovementioned patent holds them to the fire. more on this later, though it may be moot by the time the annual report arrives...
