"Conspirancy Theories" or Perceptive Analysis????? Hello Linus! Good bye Nightmare!news.com Ellison: The Net will break Microsoft By Wylie Wong Staff Writer, CNET News.com January 15, 1999, 2:35 p.m. PT SAN JOSE, California--The Internet, not the Department of Justice, is the force that will break Microsoft's monopoly , Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison said today. "Right now, the center of gravity is the personal computer. The Internet is shoving the computer out of the center...my prediction is the PC will become a peripheral product," said Ellison, in a speech at the Bay Area Council Outlook Conference here. The annual event examines the economic future of Silicon Valley. Regardless of the outcome of the government's antitrust trial, Oracle's chairman said the Internet is an "organic revolution" in the industry that is moving businesses and consumers away from Microsoft Windows and client/server-based computing to network computing. ==========================news.com Microsoft defense to run through March By Bloomberg News Special to CNET News.com January 15, 1999, 5:30 p.m. PT Microsoft expects cross examination of its witnesses in the landmark antitrust trial to last until the first week in March. The company's lead witness, Richard Schmalensee, interim dean of MIT's Sloan School of Management, will continue on the stand through next week, according to Thomas Burt, associate general counsel for the software giant. Microsoft started presenting its defense this week, in a trial that started October 19. The U.S. Justice Department and 19 states have accused Microsoft of using predatory practices to extend its monopoly in computer operating systems to Internet software, crushing rivals such as Netscape Communications. Microsoft denies the charges.
